MY MISSIOn |
Musical Theatre Buddies started from a Girl Scout Gold Award project. A Girl Scout Gold Award is an 80 hour project that produces a self sustainable program with a ripple affect through the girl’s community. When developing my idea I knew I wanted to spread my passion- musical theatre - with young people who may otherwise not be able to have the opportunity.
|
My overarching goal is to give children the opportunity to experience the beauty of musical theatre. I want them to have a hands on experience that not only includes learning the art, but doing the art. I specifically want to give this opportunity to children who are not in a position to experience this naturally, whether due to location or financial restrictions. Musical Theatre has been such a big part in developing my identity and bringing me joy, my hope is to bring this light into as many young lives as is possible.

The program
In order to make my dreams a reality I partnered two local organizations in my community: Matthews Playhouse and Freedom School Partners. Freedom School Partners gave me access to young minds and Matthews Playhouse helped me to design and teach the children a Musical curriculum.
My specific program lasted 3 weeks, and each Tuesday I spent about 90 minutes with the freedom school k-2 grade kids at the location provided to me. Through the program I worked to teach them about the main three elements of MT: Singing, Dancing, and Acting, with many correlating activities under each of the three sections. Along the way the kids also learned about Audience, Respect, Costumes, Set, Stage, warmups, actors and Lighting. (All important theatre terms.) The final Tuesday the kids were bused, courtesy of Freedom School, to Matthews Playhouse where they saw an all payed for production of The Lion King Junior.
My program was spread to a second mini program when I helped to lead a similar program to 30 Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts at Matthews Playhouse. These young girls also had the opportunity to see the show afterwards.
